But the juxtaposition of the hard exterior and delicate interior of Sweet Peas Boutique in Oxford is why residents have come to favor the off-the-beaten-path shopping experience.
Owner Val Winfrey said she and her husband took the warehouse and turned it into an entirely different look for customers when they walk into shop.
The airy space is filled with dangling chandeliers, antique furniture and wire stands. Sweet Peas Boutique also boasts a wide assortment of clothing, including denim, dresses, blouses, shorts, jewelry, purses, shoes and even Oxford Yellow Jacket apparel.
“We search for the upcoming styles and we try to be ahead of the trends,” Winfrey said. “You’ll see things that you won’t see at other stores, and our customers like that.”
Not only does Winfrey scout major cities like New York and Las Vegas for unique finds, but she also tries to give her customers high-end quality and brands that will not break the bank.
“We have a wide price range,” she said. “You can be trendy and contemporary, but everything is affordable.”
Winfrey insisted the customer service is what has kept the customers coming back to shop for almost three years. With a small staff of just two employees, Haley Elders and Abbey Gilchrist, Winfrey said they work hard to get to know the customers on a one-on-one basis.
“You can’t judge a book by its cover when looking at the outside because it’s sort of like our hidden secret,” she said. “Once you come in, meet the staff and look at our products and price points, you’ll be addicted and fall in love with our store.”
