The journalists of The Anniston Star have spent years and, in some cases, a small fortune learning in college and the real world how to accurately inform us of things we as citizens are unable or unwilling to find out for ourselves.
A case in point can be found in Anniston. While some 23,000 people lived in the Model City at the 2010 census, only a few of its residents regularly attend City Council meetings. That means thousands of us would be oblivious to what’s happening in our own city government if not for the vigilance of The Star’s news staff. The same goes for the other cities and towns served by this publication.
And don’t believe for a minute that the Birmingham TV stations would have a clue about what’s going on here without the newspaper’s help — most of them assign no more than one reporter to east Alabama, if any at all.
The way in which we get our news may be changing, but its value in our community has not changed. Let’s offer a tip of the hat, then, to the journalists of The Star, who continue to serve us so faithfully even in the face of uncertainty.
