The war on women

Is the GOP waging a war on women? Republicans would say, “No way, just partisan Democrat politics.” But is it?

Letters in The Star from people who clearly care about our country, as I do, but who think our president is to blame for everything, make me wonder: Do they really understand what the GOP is doing to their rights? Especially women’s rights?

Do they know that Republicans oppose equal pay for women, saying it isn’t good for businesses?

Do they know Republicans want to limit women’s access to contraception through insurance coverage, allowing it to be a “religious” decision by an employer along with the health-insurance company?

Do they know Republicans at the national level have repeatedly opposed renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, recently saying it was a “distraction from a small business bill”?

Do they know Republicans have proposed legislation that redefines “rape”? That their definition is limited to “forcible rape,” which excludes rapes of women who were drugged, women with limited mental capacity, and date and marital rapes? If they have daughters or granddaughters, it would probably be important for them to know. It is for me.

If they really care about this country, they should make the effort to learn the facts: the bills, the votes and the obstruction of progress. They will see that there is certainly a war on women. More broadly, there is a war on everyone other than the most affluent, and it’s being waged by the GOP, backed by corporate America, which cares about one thing and we all know what that is.
