Kudos to Rep. Jim McClendon, R-Springville, the bill’s sponsor, and Gov. Robert Bentley for their leadership on this issue.
The story is slightly different in California, where lawmakers are considering increasing the no-texting fine from $20 to $30.
As the blog ThinkProgress.org points out, Assemblyman Tim Donnelly disagrees with upping the fine. His remedy is “that we just police ourselves,” which is “what the Founders intended.”
We can’t say if Donnelly’s argument will win the day. We’re too preoccupied with the image of Thomas Jefferson sending a text.
