Benefit dinner/singing for Rider Bearden is to be 4 p.m. (auction 6 p.m.) Aug. 18 at Heflin Recreation Center, 1228 Coleman St. Rider is the son of Jason and Amber Bearden and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March. The Calhoun County Veterans Organization committee is accepting nominations for “Parade Grand Marshal” for the 2012 parade. The deadline to submit nominations is to be 6 p.m. Aug. 31. Donations needed include wide-rule paper, 24 count crayons, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, pencil bags, glue sticks, folders with prongs, markers and wide-rule composition books. To help things move faster for all parties, social workers are encouraged to make an appointment for book bag pickup, but it is not required. An AARP driver’s safety class is to be 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. today at the Oxford Library. All school teachers and employees of school may take the class for $5.
