According to a press release from the Anniston Police Department, a man and a woman were at their residence in the 900 block of Montgomery Avenue in Anniston between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. when a man in a ski mask entered through an unlocked screen door, carrying a pistol.
The man who lived in the house struggled with the intruder, according to the press release. The man who lived in the house told police he was shot in the left arm when the intruder fired his weapon two or three times. The suspect fled, the press release states, and was not in the area when police arrived and began their search.
Anniston police Sgt. Josh Doggrell said the crime was “unusual” for its time occurrence. Burglaries tend to happen during the day or late at night, he said. Doggrell said police had no reason to believe the intruder specifically targeted the home or the couple. No other reports of home invasions in the area have been reported, he said.
Doggrell said investigators are continuing their investigation in the area today. Police encourage anyone with information about the event to call investigators at 256-240-4000.
Tim Lockette and Brian Anderson contributed reporting.
