Cats of Heflin, be warned: This might be a good weekend to stick close to the porch.

For the first time in a decade, the Anniston Kennel Club is holding its annual dog show closer to home.

Today and Sunday, more than 650 show dogs from across the country and their owners will travel to the Cane 9 Creek RV Park in Heflin for the show.

The show has been held at the Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, Anniston Kennel Club vice president Karen Seriana said, because there was no facility close to home capable of hosting such a large show.

The Heflin location means a much shorter drive for local attendees, Seriana said, and having it closer to home will help support local businesses.

“It is a dog-friendly facility, and it’s a facility that’s finally big enough to handle the RV parking and also car parking,” Seriana said. “We have 650 dogs, and these people are staying at hotels and eating at restaurants for three days.”

The show will run today from 9 a.m-4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m.-3:30.

The show is free to attend, but there is a $5 parking fee.

Visitors are asked to leave their pets at home. Only show dogs who have been registered for the show will be allowed.

Cane 9 Creek RV Park is located at 5002 Alabama 46, Heflin.
