TALLADEGA --- With the mass of cars four-wide heading to the checkered flag, Talladega Superspeedway’s infamous “Big One” struck.

Michael Waltrip was being pushed by Casey Mears when the two-car train collided with Stewart making the finish a mass of twisted sheet metal and broken hopes. Twenty cars were involved.

NASCAR froze the field giving the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 win to Matt Kenseth.

“It was pretty darn fast,” Kenseth said of his car. “It was hard to control, but it was really, really fast.”

Jeff Gordon was second and Kyle Busch third. David Ragan was fourth and Greg Biffle fifth.

The wreck dash the hopes of many drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. In the end, Stewart took all the blame.

“I just screwed up,” he said. “It was my fault, I’ll take it 100 percent of the blame. … I was trying to win the race.”
