The burn area, about 6 miles north of Heflin, is bounded on the north by Forest Service Road 500, according to a release from the Forest Service. The release urges drivers traveling in the area to be on the lookout for fire crews and equipment.
Smoke from the fire is expected to blow northwest toward Rabbittown, and perhaps to areas northeast of there. Smoke may settle near the Pine Glen camp area as temperatures cool later today.
Controlled burns are fires set and monitored by Forest Service workers. The burns are intended to remove fuel that could lead to uncontrollable fires if allowed to accumulate. They also help to promote the growth of favored tree species by burning away competitor species.
