Thank you, Anniston Star, for your outstanding coverage of the recent Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners issue. You provided timely information about the board of Veterinarian Medical Examiners trying to pass a ruling that would close low-cost spay/neuter clinics in our state. But with your help and Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation getting the message out to people, the public outcry at their board meeting was overwhelming and they unanimously voted against the ruling.

We happen to be one of the non-profit organizations that helps people in Clay County get their pets spayed and neutered who can’t otherwise afford it. Calhoun County is lucky to have S.A.V.E. doing the same thing for its residents. In Clay County, we are fortunate to have the support of our local vet clinics, Twin Creeks and Country Aire. We are one of the few counties in the state that does not have its own animal shelter, so our vets are working with us to stop the overpopulation of unwanted animals. They understand the animal suffering and human expense to this unnecessary situation. They also appreciate the low-cost clinics.

We’ve been able to get 274 animals fixed in the one year since we began our program, which equates to approximately 9,864 less unwanted animals starving on the roadside, getting hit by cars or being euthanized.
