I feel that Speak Out writer Chris Page’s blame is somewhat misdirected. In 2006, Congress imposed upon the United States Postal Service an obligation to pre-fund future retiree health benefits 75 years into the future, something no other public or private agency in the U.S. faces, but only gave 10 years to accomplish this.
This unprecedented requirement takes over $5 billion per year off the top of USPS profits, which has resulted in the consolidation of post offices, mail-sorting facilities and loss of personnel. Common courtesies taken for granted in the past have become impossible under these circumstances. USPS has $45 billion set aside to this point, more than any organization in America. Congress needs to remove this unfair burden so the USPS can function as intended by our Founding Fathers.
