The most important lesson we need to teach our children is the lesson of faith in God and in His prophets. A true and firm faith in God makes us real human beings, who are responsible for our actions, behavior and attitudes. People of faith have principles and rules to follow in their lives.
Recognizing our Creator, Sustainer and Governor is a human characteristic. Eating, drinking, having families and raising our offspring … this is what we share with the animals of the jungle. Our faith makes us different. We don’t get food by cheating, stealing or snatching from a weaker animal. Similarly, we don’t fall to fulfill our desires (sexual and other) anywhere we get an opportunity. A person of faith has rules to follow: what is allowed by God and what is not. If a child is raised with faith, that child will have a very different and high perspective on life.
Similarly, we need to teach our children belief in the Prophets of God as models of their lives. Belief in Adam and Eve will teach us that if we make a mistake, we repent, and God will forgive. Belief in Noah will teach us that floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornados are from God, and we need to be careful what pleases God and what makes Him angry. The belief in Abraham and Moses will teach us that fire and water act under the powers of God only. Hence, a person of faith will be a best human being, a most helpful citizen and a person of high moral character.

A very simple lesson, really
As one who has yet to experience the joys of parenthood, I can only tell you what I hope will be the most important lesson to teach my children.
There are so many things our children need to know, so many things that they must learn in order to navigate the tumultuous waters of this life. There are also so many forces that act to shape and influence our children that are simply beyond our control.
If there is one lesson that I hope my children (and anyone who knows me for that matter) learn from me, it is simply this: God loves you and wants you to love him and everybody else.
It seems like such a simple thing to learn, but I find myself still struggling to learn such a simple, deep truth each and every day. It is the most important lesson to teach our children and ourselves.
