Six people were taken to Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries after a multi-vehicle accident this morning at the intersection of U.S. Highway 78 and Alabama Highway 21.

The accident happened at 6:45 a.m. when a tractor trailer traveling south on Highway 21 collided with a vehicle attempting to turn onto the road, Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens said. The tractor trailer continued to cross over to the northbound lane, where it hit three more vehicles. The six people sustaining injuries were all from Oxford. The victims ranged in age, including a 44-year-old, 42-year-old, 22-year-old and children ages 15, 13 and 12.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not transported to the hospital, and there were no fatalities, Owens said.

One Oxford firefighter who responded to the scene was injured when a hydraulic line blew and sprayed him in the eyes, Fire Chief Gary Sparks said. He was treated by an eye doctor and should make a quick recovery.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Owens said.
