Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley’s recent announcement not to create a private market health-insurance exchange or to expand Medicaid coverage seems to be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Leaving out the moral aspects of his decision for a moment, health care and education are vital investments in the human capital of our state. Bentley’s policies, seconded by the Republican cohort in the state Legislature, under-fund both, and they will sentence Alabama to its Third World status for another two years.

It’s time for us to emerge from the Dark Ages by putting our money where our Christian mouth is — with the people of our state who need a hand “up,” not a hand “out.”
