The Sun’s last issue will go to subscribers Dec. 28. According to publisher John Alred, weaker-than-anticipated circulation and advertising revenue led to the decision.
Consolidated launched The Sun in August 2011, adding it to a lineup that includes the daily newspapers The Anniston Star and the Daily Home, as well as the weekly Jacksonville News, Piedmont Journal, Cleburne News, and St. Clair Times.
“What we’ve discovered during the past 16 months is The Sun’s main source of competition for dollars … is The Anniston Star,” Alred wrote in a column announcing the move in Friday’s edition.
Alred wrote that The Star’s Oxford circulation is projected eventually to surpass that in the daily paper’s home city.
“I believe we were putting out a good product,” Alred wrote.
The Star’s circulation department is working on options to address balances the company owes to long-term Sun subscribers, according to Alred.
