The unthinkable happened in Newtown, Conn., when Adam Lanza stormed classrooms and shot 20 children and six adults to death. Horror stories are becoming reality in our country.

The killer’s mother, Nancy Lanza, knew about her son’s mental disorder. Even though she tried to help him, she also had guns in the house. She took him to target practice and let him watch killer movies. His basement area was full of war posters. She paid for her negligence with her life.

Parents should know if their child has a mental problem and address this as soon as possible.

We need to have armed security at all schools. Teachers should be allowed to arm themselves to protect the children. All children’s backpacks ought to be searched. Mental histories need to be checked. Assault weapons should only be allowed for police and similar organizations. Mentally ill persons should not be able to purchase a gun. Strict gun laws are needed. Anybody who buys a gun needs to be checked, including at pawn shops.

It will cost the country, but when it comes to the life of our children, no price is too high.

Those precious innocent lives will live with us forever and in our hearts.

God bless them and take them into His kingdom.
