Many of the U.S. senators and representatives questioning Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Wednesday were engaging in a delicate Washington game, and it had nothing to do with the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate.

Politicians, particularly Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs committees, touched on it lightly, but touch on it they did. The subject: 2016.

Even though President Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term mere days ago, Washington cannot resist looking ahead. Many Democrats on the committees alluded to Clinton’s political future. Wednesday’s well-wishers referenced a day when they might address her as “President Clinton.”

Expect the 2016 presidential buzz to grow for Clinton, who will soon step down from her post of secretary of State.
