America is a divided nation

This year’s Black History Month theme centers on celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement.

Blacks in America still have to struggle to achieve equality and success. I know some might say, “Get over it.” However, until you have walked in another person’s shoes, you will not be able to understand their emotions or experiences. Even though I have experienced hardship, I am proud to be a senior citizen who was able to witness the election of an African-American president. In addition, I am praying that one day I will be able to witness another historic moment in American history — a female president.

Regardless of race, I feel America is still a divided nation based on two categories of people — the haves and the have-nots. I pray it will not always be this way. We all need to strive for unity, love and peace.
