Saving money at the USPS

I have a plan for the U.S. Postal Service that I believe will save money. It wouldn’t be a popular plan for the workers or the postal union, and it would have to be renegotiated. But with the extreme losses the Postal Service is losing in funds, there is a need to take drastic measures.

First, cut mail delivery on Monday, not Saturday. Most federal holidays fall on a Monday. Sunday and Monday would be off days. This would save money going out in federal holiday pay.

If a holiday like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and July 4 falls within the Tuesday-Saturday work week, then the Monday before the holiday would be a work day.

This would provide for five days of mail delivery. If a holiday falls within the Monday-Friday work week, you receive only four days of mail service, while the worker receives five days’ pay.

I know it sounds harsh, but with the mismanagement in the Postal Service, and Washington asking others for cuts, I think the Postal Service needs to take a long, hard look at how to save money and step up.
