Best Buy employees at 1100 Oxford Exchange Blvd. called police this morning after Thomas Corey Thompson, 23, of Jacksonville, exited the store between 9:40 a.m. and 9:55 a.m. with $1,495 in merchandise, including an XBox video game system, a Sony Playstation system, a set of Dr. Dre Beats headphones, a Kindle e-reader and a tablet computer, Lt. L.G. Owens said.
Thompson got into a green 1997 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Anthony Matthew Gaidurgis, 25, of Rome, Ga., and sped away, according to Owens.
Oxford police spotted the vehicle on the ramp entering Interstate 20 eastbound at exit 188. The suspects fled in the vehicle and police pursued. The Suburban left I-20 at exit 191, headed south on U.S. 431. The chased ended when the suspects’ car slipped off the road, Owens said.
No one was injured, according to the lieutenant.
Police discovered the stolen items in the vehicle and returned them to Best Buy, Owens said.
Thompson and Gaidurgis both were charged with second-degree theft, a felony, and were in the Oxford City Jail this afternoon. Bond and court dates have yet to be set.
