Re “Forgetting Selma” (H. Brandt Ayers column, March 10):

Our public school systems are not pretending to be communist institutions so unsure of themselves that free speech must be outlawed.

Five decades past, the federal government embarked on a several generations-long process of under-education, spewing forth ill-educated dolts who are confused, without skills and unaware of the necessity of self-sufficiency with a learned aversion to criticism or actual work.

The feds began underwriting student loans in 1965, and since that time the cost of a college education has risen 20-fold. In the past decade, the number of graduates leaving college with a $40,000 debt has increased 10-fold.

Omnipotent, relentless liberalism has placed flowers on the grave of sound reasoning.
