An incarcerated man was charged with assaulting another inmate this weekend in the Calhoun County Jail.

Louis Fenton Brown III, 28, of Anniston, was charged Saturday with second-degree assault, a felony, according to Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson.

The victim was eating breakfast when Brown attacked him, Amerson said. The man sustained a cut under his right eye and broken facial bones, Amerson said. He was taken to Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Brown has been in the jail since March 28, the sheriff said. Oxford police had charged him with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Amerson said fights in the jail are common, but typically don’t result in serious injuries.

“One thing we always do is give inmates the opportunity to make a report and to pursue their case in court,” Amerson said.

After a fight, Amerson said, the aggressor is usually moved to another section of the jail and could be reclassified as a violent offender.

Brown’s total bond is set at $31,000, Amerson said. A court date is scheduled for May 2.
