JSU conference to feature new media marketers

People across the country seek marketing advice from Christina “CK” Kerley and Mack Collier, and on Tuesday the pair will teach a local audience how to boost their bottom lines through the use of emerging technologies.

Collier and Kerley will be the featured speakers at “Power to the People: Revolutionize your Brand Through Social Media and Mobile Marketing,” a one-day conference at Jacksonville State University. Attendees at the mid-week event can expect to learn how to use mobile devices and social networking sites, such as Twitter, to market products and services to reach an online audience and to connect with potential customers.

“A lot of folks don't know where to begin,” said Angie Finley, a spokeswoman for the university. “This is going to be about those tools. It’s going to be about how to use those tools effectively.”

Kerley has worked to help companies such as Johnson & Johnson and GE Energy better market their products. She also has also served as a guest lecturer at some of the nation’s top universities, speaking to students at Stanford, Cornell, Rutgers and Northwestern universities.

On Tuesday at JSU, she will talk about how people can use mobile devices to market products and services.

“We’re seeing successes stories on continents that have not always had the success stories,” Kerley said. “The little guy is able to make a big impact because of the very effects of this technology.”

Collier specializes in teaching audiences how to use social media as a marketing tool. His book, “Think like a Rock Star: How to Create Social Media and Marketing Strategies That Turn Customers into Fans,” was recently published by McGraw-Hill.

Collier also hosts a weekly “blogchat” about blogging on Twitter each Sunday at 8 p.m. Twitter users can find it using the hashtag: #blogchat. He said between 2 and 3 million people engage in, or follow the chat, each week.

“It’s more about how companies can use social media to connect with their customers,” Collier said of his message.

Both Kerley and Collier have Alabama connections. Kerley, who is based out of New York City, is the child of Alabama natives and Collier is an Alabama resident and native, who now lives in the Muscle Shoals area.

Kerley’s Alabama roots and a chance meeting with JSU’s Finley at a week-long conference at Rutgers University last year established a connection that helped the institution secure the conference. Kerley said when she learned at the conference that Finley represented JSU, her interest was piqued.

Kerley’s mother, whose maiden name was Sandra Johnson, was a 1964 graduate of the university.

“It’s a really special thing for me to be able to present her alma mater,” Kerley said of her mother, who passed away in 2007.

Kerley and Collier each have their own consulting companies and do not work together directly, but know each other. Collier said his connection with Kerley, coupled with the opportunity to speak in his home state motivated him to sign up for the event.

“I love speaking in Alabama whenever I can, because I think Alabama doesn't have the benefit of having many events like this,” Collier said.
