The Save-A-Lot discount grocery store in Jacksonville will close and a new grocery will open in its place in May.

The Save-A-Lot store is expected to shut its doors May 10, and Price Less IGA will open in the same location by May 13, said Tammy Banks, the local project manager for Houchens Industries Food Group. She said while the Save-A-Lot chain specializes in providing discount food brands, the new store will also offer name-brand items.

“You’ve got a lot to offer to a mixed variety of your customers,” Banks said. “I think they’re really going to love the change.”

While the store will change its name and offer more selection, it won’t be changing ownership, Banks said. The new store will also not increase in square footage, but it will boast an improved appearance, Banks said. She said other Save-A-Lot stores have successfully transitioned to Price Less IGA groceries in Alabama and in several other states.

The new store will include a meat department, a deli and bakery department and a produce department.

The grocery store will hold a job fair this week to recruit managers, cashiers and other employees to add to its five-person payroll, Banks said. The job fair will be held at the University Hampton Inn from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.

Banks describe the location as a “smaller-box store” and said the new store will resemble a Winn Dixie or Food Giant.

When questioned, city officials knew little about the Price Less IGA’s planned move, but one official confirmed changes planned for anther Jacksonville grocery store. Food Outlet applied for permits to replace three signs in recent weeks, said Mark Williams, Jacksonville’s building inspector.
