An Anniston man was charged Wednesday with sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl in March.

The 19-year-old man was charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, according to a police report.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the man inappropriately touched the girl’s chest during a visit to his home on the 700 block of Front Street on March 23.

George said the suspect invited the girl and a 9-year-old boy to his home “to play a game.”

The girl later told her uncle she was touched by the suspect.

The Calhoun-Cleburne County Children’s Center, Department of Human Resources and Anniston police investigated the incident and found enough evidence to prosecute the 19-year-old, George said.

The suspect was in the Anniston City Jail on Thursday afternoon. Bond is set at $5,000. A court appearance is scheduled for June 10.

The Star typically withholds the identities of those charged with sex crimes unless they are convicted or plead guilty, because the stigma associated with such charges can linger even if the charges are dropped or the suspect is exonerated.
