A 21-year-old woman told police Monday that her boyfriend stole $800 and then left town in her car.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the victim gave her boyfriend $1,250 on Sunday to repair the engine in her burgundy 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The victim told police the engine would cost $450 and the remaining $800 was supposed to be spent on window tinting and graphics for the car, George said.

The suspect later called the victim and told her he took her car and money and went to Ohio, the captain said. The car is valued at $5,000, according to a police report.

The victim didn’t know her tag number or VIN number, George said, and the car can’t be reported stolen on the National Crime Information Center without that information.

George said the theft was under investigation today.

Any suspect could be charged with felony first-degree theft.
