Today I called U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York’s Washington office to follow up on last month’s call I made concerning his referring to me and millions of other Southern white Americans as “crackers.”

I was told by one of his staff that Rep. Rangel stood by his statement and that I was just trying to stir up trouble by asking that he clarify his statement. This kind of behavior is inexcusable from anyone, but to have an elected official who is supposed to help lead our country toward a common goal and past the racial, separatist past, behave this way, then continue to stand by their statement of hate, is totally repulsive. No person of this character should be allowed to serve in public office.
