The break came in eighth grade when Dothard was burned out from playing every sport White Plains High had to offer.
The return didn’t take long — he said he had to get back to the game.
Now a senior for the Wildcats, Dothard has taken over at quarterback while also starting for his third season at safety. The move on offense is one he said is a lot more stressful than expected, but he added he loves it.
Dothard took a break from basketball last season, but still hits the diamond for White Plains. This spring will mark his fourth season on the varsity squad.
After baseball season concludes and Dothard graduates, he plans to attend Troy or Jacksonville State. For each, he’s two points short on the ACT of a full-tuition scholarship.
During a class break recently, Dothard sat down with Anniston Star preps writer Brandon Miller and tackled 10 questions:
Question: You’ve played multiple sports, but which is your favorite sport?
Answer: Football. If you play baseball, then you have 20 to 25 games. But you can’t replace Friday nights. It’s just that feeling on Friday night that you get.
Q: Do you ever get tired playing both ways in football?
A: Sometimes, but we’ve been running
a lot more this year. Our workouts are pretty rough and they’re intense. They’ve gotten us in good shape.
Q: What does “Built It” mean to you?
A: We’ve never really had a serious football program here. Around the county it’s kind of been a laughing stock, but when coach (Heath) Harmon came here when I was in seventh grade, it was “Build It.” We’re trying to gain respect and win games. We’re probably a little over halfway in the process, and we’ve come a long way.
Q: Do you have a favorite school in Calhoun County other than White Plains?
A: Not really, but it’s fun to play other schools in the county especially in baseball. It’s a fun rivalry between like us and Jacksonville and us and Alexandria. Since it’s not an area game we just kind of play for fun.
Q: How did you get jersey No. 4?
A: Coach Harmon just gave it to me in ninth grade since I didn’t ask for anything. I like it, though, but I don’t know why. I’ve had the same number in baseball since ninth grade because I figured I’d keep the same.
Q: Who’s going to win the BCS national championship?
A: It’s got to be Alabama. They’ve got a program and I think they’re staying hungry. And AJ McCarron is keeping them on the right track, I think.
Q: Do you play in any fantasy sports leagues?
A: No. I tried playing football a few years ago, but I couldn’t keep up with it because I’m too busy.
Q: Of all the jerseys in any sport that you’ve worn at White Plains, which is your favorite?
A: I love the new Nike football jerseys we have. They’re really nice and just like college jerseys. Now, I like the away (jersey) more because they have our names on them.
Q: What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
A: I still have it now. Last spring I started working at the greenhouses by the school. It’s 10 hours of minimum-wage hard work.
I basically move flowers and dirt. But it works with my schedule.
Q: What’s your favorite pregame meal?
A: Probably the grilled chicken that we’ve been having with green beans and macaroni and cheese. I also like to add barbecue sauce to the chicken.
