It’s hard not to laugh when college football pundits, coaching legends and fans decry the reported pick of Condoleezza Rice to the selection committee for the sport’s new four-team playoff.

To them all, here’s a challenge.

Sit around a board-room table with Rice. Engage in a debate on whether a woman belongs on such an important committee.

Test wits with she who has spoken her mind in meetings with sharks like Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and, just possibly, told the leader of the free world something he didn’t want to hear.

Challenge the football knowledge of someone who has dealt with matters of war and peace. She’ll welcome the change of pace, and the other seven-eighths of her considerable mind will welcome the nap.

Doubtingly seek depth from she who has held a senior leadership position at one of the nation’s premier academic institutions. One might have heard of Stanford, since the school has gotten good at football lately.

Have at it, fellas and even female doubters, if any. The conversation might start with her coach dad and one-time, NFL-player fiancé, but it won’t end there.

The first one not reduced to saying, “Thank you for your time, Madam Secretary,” wins a press conference to sell us on why a smoke-filled room full of football heads doesn’t need her.
