On Nov. 22, 1963, I was a freshman at Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia. I had just entered the lobby of the freshmen men’s dorm after a late-morning class when Mike Sedlak, a classmate whom under normal circumstances I would have long forgotten, dashed up the stairs from the TV lounge and excitedly shouted, “Kennedy’s been shot.” Several of us rushed to our favorite history professor and watched TV with him as the fateful news was delivered. The ROTC honor guard lowered the flag to half staff and we watched television endlessly in the following days.
