WEAVER — Expansion is on the Weaver agenda again.

Just a few months after it brought two businesses on Alabama 21 into the city, the City Council agreed Tuesday night to seek to annex more property on the corridor connecting Anniston to Jacksonville.

Almost 19 acres of land and more than a half-mile long strip of highway property could be incorporated if legislation is approved in Montgomery. The desired land isn’t contiguous to any Weaver boundary, therefore the legislation is needed if the annexation is to occur.

Weaver Mayor Wayne Willis said he hopes the property will attract some more business to the city. At least, eventually.

"It's not helping us right now," the mayor said, noting no business has approached him or the council about the land. "But down the road this is going to pay off big."

Ideally, Willis said, he thinks once construction of the Anniston Eastern bypass is completed, the section of Alabama 21 heading toward Jacksonville could become prime real estate for a big box store like Costco.

The Meharg Estate currently owns the property, according to Calhoun County tax records. Willis said attempts to reach a representative of the estate were unsuccessful, but the annexation intent is being advertised, as required by law.

The council on Tuesday also signed off on a $580,000 loan with Metro Bank in Heflin. The much-discussed loan will go toward paving projects, buying equipment, upgrading the city's park and paying for a new communication system for the Weaver Police Department.
