WEAVER — Saks High was the last local team standing in Class 3A during the football playoffs. On Monday night, the Wildcats stood tall again, but in a different sport.

With a 78-69 victory over top-seeded Weaver, second-seeded Saks claimed the 3A, Area 10 boys basketball championship.

As a reward, Saks will stay home Friday night when it hosts Area 9 runner-up Cleveland in the sub-regionals.

“We were fortunate to win Friday night over Piedmont, who was playing really good basketball at the end of the season, to keep the season alive,” Saks head coach Jonathan Miller said. “This is one of the toughest areas in northeast Alabama, and we are fortunate to come out on top.”

The Wildcats were led by a 21-point outburst from Tre Smith, and Roc Green added 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Even though Daniel Heard dealt with foul trouble throughout the night, he chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

“I’m not sure what was working, but it’s been my best game this season,” Smith said. “I haven’t played Weaver this year, so I thought I’d go all-in tonight.”

With Heard in foul trouble, Monty Young stepped up and finished with a huge double-double — 18 points and 15 rebounds.

“Daniel and I have this thing where when we are in, we have to crash the boards hard,” Young said. “So when he went out, I knew I had to pick up where he left off.”

Weaver, despite the loss, will continue its season by traveling to the Area 9 champions, Ashville, which lost to the Bearcats in December during the Van Deerman Class at Jacksonville High.

Weaver found production off the bench from Shon’D McKinney, who finished with a game-high 22 points. Guard Chris English also added 19 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Timothy Hawkins finished the night with a double-double — 10 points and 10 rebounds.
