The results of two statewide newspaper contests judging work from 2008 are in, and The Anniston Star collected more than two dozen awards.

In the Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors newspaper contest, The Star won six first-place awards and 19 overall.

In the Alabama Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, The Star collected 12 awards, including one first-place for a human-interest column by Laura Tutor.

Star sports columnist Joe Medley won the top prize in three APME categories — sports column, sports sweepstakes and non-deadline reporting (which he shared with former Star sports writer Creg Stephenson).

The APME contest was judged by AP member newspaper editors in Arkansas. The North Carolina Press Association judged the APA competition, which included 2,917 entries from 67 newspapers.

"We are honored that our work has been recognized in these contests," said Bob Davis, The Star's editor.
