In his three years at Wellborn, Smith has doubled the size of the band and has produced marching and concert bands that have scored superior ratings at every competition they have attended. He has developed one of the few organizations at the school providing both a successful and positive experience for the students. We can't say that about a lot of our athletic programs, but some of the coaches are still there. It feels like the band is being punished for doing well.
Virtually all the band parents and all of the band students respect and admire Smith and do not want him to leave. A band student collected a petition with more than 250 student and parent signatures and it was presented to the Calhoun County Board of Education at a called meeting asking that Smith be reinstated. This meeting was attended by more than 40 Wellborn band students and parents.
It will be a huge blow to the Wellborn band program and community if Smith is not rehired. The Board of Education should reverse the decision. The students at Wellborn should not be deprived of the talents and abilities of such a fine person as Adam Smith.
