It should come as no surprise to the readers of The Star that U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, has trouble with some of the decisions of Sonia Sotomayor on the Court of Appeals in New York.

It may be that Shelby does not understand some of these decisions as most of the legal scholars across the country have praised her writings. Shelby should be praised for "bringing home the bacon" to Alabama, although he has been opposed to this type of payoff to the voters.

Shelby is not known as a legal scholar. This could be the reason he indicates he is opposing President Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court. Alabama deserves better representation than Shelby is giving us.
