Re "Shelby out of touch" (Speak Out, June 18):

Former state Sen. Tom Radney criticized U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby and inferred that Shelby is not qualified to question President Obama's selection of Sonia Sotomayor as a candidate for U.S. Supreme Court because of Shelby's education in legal matters — or the lack thereof.

Shelby has been in the Senate for a number of years. Surely he is able to make judgments on legal questions and has the forethought to find out what he deems necessary for the good of our country.
