July 14, 1934, in The Star: In a short column of Jacksonville social news, compiled by Mrs. J. R. Arnold, we learn that Mrs. Reuben Self and Mrs. J. F. Glazner were joint hostesses earlier this week when they entertained at an afternoon bridge shower in compliment to Mrs. Francis Irby, a recent bride. Also this week in the college town, the Women's Guild of St. Luke's Episcopal home was welcomed by hostess Mrs. Palmer Daugette Talbot. Also this date: Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run yesterday against the Detroit Tigers. The ball sailed more than 500 feet and landed in the street outside Navin Field. A boy retrieved it and returned it to the slugger, who gave him $20, according to an account by a sportswriter for United Press.

July 14, 1984, in The Star: Boosted by 200 new jobs, mostly in the manufacturing sector, Calhoun County's unemployment rate dropped from 10 percent in April to 9.4 percent in May. Also this date: Rev. Emmett Pettus Roper, 47, is a full-time Baptist evangelist who runs a ministries program from his home in the New Liberty community northwest of Jacksonville. One of ten children born to tenant farmers in Webster's Chapel, young Emmett realized when he was just 16 that he had been called to preach. In August 1982 he became an evangelist after being a preacher for the 22 years previous. Roper is also an amateur radio operator.
