The Jacksonville City Council held the first reading of a new smoking ordinance Monday night. The new ordinance would require all new businesses coming into town to be completely smoke free and any businesses in town who currently have a ventilation system allowing people to smoke in their establishment would have to become non-smoking in 15 years.

"This is an ordinance amending our current smoking ordinance and the only change is anyone that now has a smoking area where they have the required ventilation system, they will be allowed to continue, I think there's only two of those in town, but everyone else from now on will be totally no smoking and these two will continue for 15 years," said Mayor Johnny Smith.

The ordinance will be up for a vote by the council at its next meeting July 27 at 7 p.m.

During the work session prior to Monday night's meeting the council discussed how to proceed with choosing a new member for the Jacksonville City Board of Education. Sue Jones, who held a position on the board since 2000, resigned in June to move to Birmingham. Eight people have applied for her vacant position.

The council agreed to interview each applicant and plan to set those interviews for July 28 and 30 beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Applicants for the position are Carol Hagan, a former elementary school teacher; David Dempsey, a math professor at Jacksonville State University; David Glass, an insurance agent at Calhoun County Insurance Co.; Lovelle Buchanon, who works for Gadsden State Community College; Steve Smith, who ran against Jones in the 2008 school board elections; Mary Montgomery Owens, who teaches in the education department at JSU; Thomas Buzan, Jr. and Caroline Allen-Roth.
