JACKSONVILLE — JSU coach Jack Crowe confirmed the Gamecocks have had contact with Jermaine Preyear, the Alabama running back looking for a transfer. A decision isn't expected before the end of the week. If Preyear comes to JSU, he likely would fill the role previously reserved by another former Bama back, Tremayne Coger.

• JSU NEAR NAMING WILLIAMS COACH: The Gamecocks are close to formally naming Davern Williams as their new defensive line coach. Millsaps announced Williams' departure to join JSU on July 16, but the assistant coach still hasn't completed the JSU hiring process. Williams, 29, signed with Auburn, transferred to Troy and played two seasons in the NFL. He replaces Dan Augustine, who left JSU for Central Arkansas.
