Re "The message of Kids Count: We must strive to help children" (Editorial, Nov. 18):

Kudos to The Star's editorial board for its editorial regarding Calhoun County's ranking in the 2009 Alabama Kids Count data book. You "get it."

The publication is not intended to start an "ain't things awful" discussion, but, as it was so aptly put, "to serve as a stern wake-up call" for those in the community who can move things in the right direction.

We hope the publication spurs community action to look beneath the surface of the individual numbers, assess the causes of various problems as well as community resources, and develop new ones where they are needed to improve child well-being in the county. Doing so will not only ensure a better future for children, but also future economic vitality for the county.
