I’ll be yours, if you’ll be mine,

Everything will be so fine,

If you’ll be my Valentine ...

My very first valentine?

No idea ... could have been my first day in the first grade when, for the first time, I met up with young ladies who were not my sisters nor cousins.

My last one?

Really easy ...

She’s the blonde and she’s a mother and grandmother, and still the best-looking thing I’ve ever seen in a skirt.

I told her that last night ... over candy and flowers and a balloon from Wal-Mart bumping against the kitchen ceiling.

Over the years, that’s been the same song, just another verse. I’m not about to tell you the years this morning, but I will say our Valentine Days have reached the stage worthy of bragging, no lying.

And yes, there was a card from Hallmark, one that I put some effort in finding, one that I feel expresses certain sentiments that have marked our journey through the years.

I’d like to share it ...

“Happy Valentine’s Day to the woman who’s the LOVE of my LIFE ...

“ ... from the guy who’s sometimes a PAIN in your BUTT!

(Sorry about that!)

Now, this morning, put your hands on the Holy Book and swear that, over the years ...

Yeah, I heard you guys mumbling ...

“Wish he hadn’t PUT THAT in the paper this morning ...”

And yeah, I can hear all you ladies mumbling ...

“At least he told the truth and is apologizing for being a pain in the ...”

Thing is, that sits right on the chair with ...

“The course of true love never did run smooth ...”

Fellow by the name of William Shakespeare penned that one a long time ago and it has pretty much stood the test of time.

Thing is, True Love also runs sweet and deep and the one I’ve had over the years has to be on anybody’s Top Ten list of, like, the best of the good times.

I don’t mean to get all that sloppy with you, so I think I’d better do something to pull this “love boat” out of the ditch.

So, let me offer up a few more things I found on the Internet about love ... as in there are times one needs to look at the exquisite pain of the heart with some humor:

“Love is much nicer to be in than an automobile accident, a tight girdle, a higher tax bracket, or a holding pattern over Philadelphia.” — Judith Viorst

I agree with all of that except for that higher tax bracket. The more taxes you owe, the more money you have available for your blonde.

Then there is this ...

“Love is like the measles; we all have to go through it.” — Jerome K. Jerome

I’ve only had one true love in my life, but in those years of zits and dreams impossible, it is my opinion measles are a snap compared to unrequited love.

But then, down where the hearts live close to one another, there is ...

“To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.” — David Viscott

And, finally ... “If music be the food of love, play on.” — William Shakespeare

So ... “Play it again, Sam ... and ... Happy Valentine, Sweetheart.
