We'll have another cloudy day here in Calhoun County. Temperatures will decrease again with a high of 65 predicted for the area. The sunshine and low 80s temperatures should return later in the week.

Meetings

Meetings taking place today in our area

The Anniston City Council will meet today at 2 p.m. The Star will live blog the meeting from beginning to end. Mayor Robinson's tax increase plan is on the agenda again. You can read the formal and informal agendas on the city of Anniston website.

The Oxford City Council will also meet today at 6:30 p.m. We won't have live coverage of this meeting, but the full story will be available in Wednesday's Star.

Sports spotlight

Sporting events taking place today

America's pastime will be well represented by Jacksonville State University this evening. The Gamecock baseball team will host the UAB Blazers today at 6:30 p.m. The softball team will head to Auburn to take on the Tigers.

During the time First Christian Church is being redecorated, the congregation is meeting at Anniston High School auditorium. The Rev. T.O. Slaughter, 41, is pastor. Also this date: This morning preliminaries for the annual junior high school track and field meet began at Alexandria High School. There will be two weight classes in the competition: up to and including 125 pounds (Class A) and above (Class B).

April 27, 1985, in The Star

Anniston Star features writer and columnist Dennis Love has penned his final column for the newspaper. In today’s piece he informs his readers and fans that he’s going to work next as assistant campaign manager in the gubernatorial bid of former Lt. Gov. George McMillan. Love says that when he gets old, he wants to live with all his friends in a nursing home where they can play Springsteen records real loud and watch Letterman tapes on VCRs. Love’s days at The Star date back to an internship in 1975. Also this date: Oxford’s Lakeview Baptist Church is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The congregation started out in August 1934 as a Sunday school class meeting in a building that overlooked Oxford Lake — hence the name. Its members only later decided to become a formal church. Their first vote was to decide which denomination they would affiliate themselves with, and because more of the members were Baptist by birth, that denomination won out. The new church organized May 16, 1935.
