Having recently participated in "The Big Read" through local libraries, I was excited to pick up my copy of Salvation on Sand Mountain: Snake Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia.

This book has been chosen as the summer reading selection by the student life staff and faculty for all incoming freshmen at Jacksonville State University. I challenge all JSU alumni within the sound of my voice to support the university's goal of creating life-long learners and join the first-year students in this literary and cultural adventure.

Then, I encourage each of you to come and see author Dennis Covington when he is scheduled to speak on campus in November. To find out more about what's going at JSU visit www.jsu.edu. Education does not end at commencement, it is just a beginning.
