Ruth Reichl lands
on her feet
The big question in food publishing for the last year has been where Ruth Reichl would land after Conde Nast closed down Gourmet magazine last October. This week, Random House publishers announced that she would be joining them as an author and editor-at-large.
Reichl, already a bestselling author, has contracted for three books, two of which will be nonfiction, including The Tao of Ruth, which she says was suggested in an Anthony Bourdain story. The other will be the latest installment in her memoirs, covering the years at Gourmet. Food gossip fans are already salivating. In addition, there are plans for her first novel, Delicious.
New cookbook: Italian 101
The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion and Cooking Manual by Frank Falcinelli, Frank Castronovo and Peter Meehan (Artisan, 2010) uses simple Italian fare to reinforce the importance of excellent, basic ingredients and the need to get back in touch with them. Make your own pasta. Like, with your hands. Taste your pasta boiling water to see whether it is salty, rather than relying on measurements. And throw out those jars of sauce; making your own requires only five ingredients.
