When work increases at Anniston Army Depot, it’s a win-win for Calhoun County and the thousands of area families who depend on depot paychecks for their livelihood.

That’s why we cheer when the depot’s workload is on the upswing.

Today, it’s too early to tell if the possible collaboration between the depot, the city of Anniston and its airport, and the Talladega County Economic Development Authority will indeed give the depot more activity.

From what we’ve heard — it’s not much — it sounds like a promising scenario. Using Anniston Metropolitan Airport to fly weapons with general explosives to the depot just makes more sense than using an airport that’s farther away.

In fact, it makes us wonder why this hasn’t happened before.

Let’s hope this deal gets done for two reasons: (a.) Anniston needs to get more bang for its buck out of its airport; and (b.) the depot, as Calhoun Countians well know, constantly has to prove its worth to Washington.

That’s a full-time concern here in this county, especially since any troop drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan could reduce the workload in Anniston.

Wheels are turning; nothing’s finalized. But this seems like just the type collaboration that should benefit Anniston.
