Located at 207 Old Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe, New Mexico, is Our Lady of Light Chapel (known as Loretta Chapel because it’s operated by the Sisters of Loretta). The small chapel, built in the 1870’s, was so small that no stairway to the choir loft was built because it would decrease seating capacity.

Legend has it the Sisters prayed for a solution. An unknown carpenter appeared to design and construct the circular stairway using wooden pegs and no visible support system. The “miraculous stairway” has 33 steps in two full 360 degree turns.

The carpenter left without seeking payment for his labor. The Sisters of Loretta believed the carpenter was an embodiment of Saint Joseph the Carpenter.
