The society located a grower in Tennessee that regularly had 20,000 pounds of green beans going to waste. The beans were too short or too long to be sold in grocery stores, but were still edible.
Grace Baptist Church and Mountain View Church are paying for freight and calling for volunteers to bag the loose green beans for distribution to local feeding agencies. The green beans should equal about 60,000 servings.
Volunteers can show up to bag beans from 8 a.m. today until the last bean is bagged. Rain date is Oct. 6. All ages welcome. Volunteers are asked to bring a portable chair; all other supplies will be provided. Grace Baptist Church is at 2018 Hinton Drive, Oxford.
The Society of St. Andrew is a faith-based non-profit that salvages fresh produce at the farm level, making it available to those in need.
